We Filipinos are very musically inclined people. Its in our DNA to excel in music and we have conquered the world in terms of our talent. That is why, at such at an early age, most parents nurture the talent of music by letting their kids learn their first instrument. And most likely, it’s the guitar that is the instrument of choice. We are going to cover in this blog why the guitar is the most popular kind of music instrument.

Reasons why the guitar is so popular

Affordability

In terms of price range, you can get a good acoustic “practice” guitar for as low as 5,000 pesos ($100). Though once you get a handle of the instrument, you will most likely shop for more established brands to get a better sound while you play.

Reputation

The guitar is the instrument with the most reputation and is known across different social classes and cultures. Famous guitar players like Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix and Slash has inspired countless generations to pick up the instrument in the hopes of making it big in the music industry.

Flexibility and Portability

Guitars can cross genres like no other musical instrument can. So, if you want to build a set of songs from different artists of different genres, the guitar is your best bet. It’s also easier to carry around and take it from place to place as opposed to other musical instruments.

Learning Curve

All you need is to learn at least 4 chords to be able to play a song. A band in Australia actually noticed that and made a medly of songs that are entirely composed of 4 chords.  You can watch their video by clicking on this link.

Speaking of learning curve, The Bailiwick Academy offers courses in acoustic guitar. We have created an easy format for newbies to follow and get the best tips and tricks from a leading expert in the industry. Check out the classes by Chin Alcantara of MYMP  as well as view a free course in setting up an acoustic guitar for gigs.

Homeschool or learning from your home has intrigued me for a long time. I am a home person. Seldom do I go out unless it is necessary. I would love to have my children learn at home and efficiently use our time to learn more and to spend time together. I myself thought about getting my education for myself in the past.

When did this idea started? Traffic! I have avoided any work that brings me to regular work hours or requires me to travel outside my city. I had suffered mostly after graduating high school when my commute got me further from home. During college I had to go to school in Manila and my classes started around the same time as the office and other schools within the same area not to mention the density of schools, offices and other establishments. I had to wake up crazy hours to at least a lot two hours to make it on time! An hour or 30 minutes later might not cut it close. Sometimes I can get delayed by thirty minutes and sometimes an hour. Better be too early. There was one time where I left the house 3 hours ahead so I can be relaxed before taking a test and have time to study a bit more. As if the universe conspired to play a joke on me, I was late for thirty minutes! Of all the days a fire can break out it has to be at my route and when I have an exam. So much time of our youth wasted!  There are also safety issues that all have to worry about. I was fortunate enough not to experience any life threatening encounters however I have seen a couple of times people robbed in front of me while in a jeepney. This got me thinking. What are our options as parents or students or anyone who wants to get their education done at home? Homeschool, right? I did a few digging as I am thinking of this option for my children.

I just found out that there is an organization that aims to equip homeschools and organizations for institutions which offers homeschooling called Homeschool Association Of The Philippine Islands. It is a non-profit and non-stock group supporting existing and new institutions to the growing homeschooling movement. Their aim to make homeschooling recognized as an available and respected form of education.

Below are their listed members including a short description taken from their websites. Included are their contact details. I advise to contact the school for information that are not in their websites or updated informations or questions you may have on their homeschool offering.
