Do you find yourself constantly wondering, “Why are sandwiches so good?” Or are you one of the many people bored with their daily sandwich, looking for good sandwich ideas for their next meal?

Well, if you’re part of the latter, we can’t blame you. Because the Philippines is a rice-loving country, sandwiches aren’t exactly a top priority here when it comes to variations. In fact, we’re probably limited to four kinds of sandwiches: cheese, tuna, peanut butter, and fast-food burgers.

But as much as Pinoys love rice meals, not all of us have the time to sit down and eat – a lot of us are constantly on the go, making sandwiches convenient as meals. And if you’re the one doing all the driving, you know very well that rice meals aren’t feasible to eat.

That’s the reason we need some good sandwich ideas! We do need to look forward to eating despite being on the go all the time, right?

So if you’re looking for new and fun sandwich ideas to make your meals less boring, then keep on reading! These are definitely not your basic sandwich ideas! Make sure to take note of these – you never know, one of the items on the list might just become one of your to-go sandwich ideas!

Without further ado, let’s get to it!

1) Reuben Sandwich – one of the good sandwich ideas from Nebraska!

We might be biased, but if ever there’s a talk about the best sandwich idea ever, the Reuben is definitely one of our favorites to win. This very delicious grilled sandwich consists of corned beef, Swiss Cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. It’s best served hot, but it also tastes really great even if served cold.

According to Nebraskan history, the Reuben was invented by local grocer Reuben Kulakofsky back in 1925. He came up with it in Omaha’s Blackstone Hotel to feed some late-night poker players. The owner of the hotel, Charles Schimmel, liked it so much that he put it on the menu of the hotel’s restaurant.

There are many other origin stories for this sandwich, but all we have to say is, whoever that true Reuben is, thank you for one of, if not THE Best sandwich recipe ever!

2) Meatball Sub – one good sandwich idea NOT from Italy

What’s good in sandwiches, you ask? Well, meatballs, tomato or marinara sauce don’t sound bad to us, wouldn’t you agree? After all, those are the main ingredients of a meatball sub!

Put those in between some Italian bread or a baguette, then take a bite. Sooooo good!

According to Taste Atlas, the reason for these ingredients is that this particular sandwich is an invention of Italian Americans at the turn of the 20th century. We’re guessing that it’s because they love their meatballs and they wanted a way to make them more consumable on the go.

And of course, there’s nothing stopping you from adding cheese, garlic, green pepper, and more to enhance the flavor.

3) Philly Cheesesteak – just one GOOD sandwich!

If you ask people from the city of Philadelphia what the best sandwich steak recipe is, they will likely tell you that there’s nothing better than a Philly Cheesesteak. In Carolyn Wyman’s book titled “The Great Philly Cheesesteak Book,” she writes that:

“A Philly cheesesteak is not just bread, meat, and cheese coming together. It’s a Philadelphia cultural icon – a subject of love and loyalty, politics and pride, history and hubris.”

The origin of this sandwich, according to Visit Philadelphia, was way back in 1930, and all thanks to hot dog vendor Pat Oliveri. The story is that he wanted to have steak for lunch, and put the meat on an Italian roll.

As he was doing so, a cab driver came over to buy a hot dog. The driver saw what was happening and asked Oliveri to make him one too. And the rest is history!

Of course, you don’t have to go to Philadelphia to try this iconic sandwich out. After all, it’s just a sandwich made with very thinly sliced ribeye steak, caramelized onions, and melted cheese all placed between a long hoagie roll. Some people also put additional ingredients like bell peppers and mushrooms, but Philly locals will argue that it’s only considered authentic if there are no added elements.

Well, who are we to argue, right?

4) Avocado Toast – one fruity good sandwich idea

Avocado toast has many origin stories, some going back to the 70s, but what we do know is that avocado toast is one of the many interesting sandwich ideas that has ever come to pass. Also, it was in 2010 that avocado toast became such a hit in the USA.

And since it became such a trendy sandwich, why not try it? If you’re on a ketogenic diet, pair avocado with keto bread, and you’ll have good sandwich ingredients to keep you from getting kicked out of the ketogenic diet. You can also add a fried egg on top of the avocado for one savory meal.

Awesome, right?

5) Shawarma – one of the good sandwich ideas from the Middle East

You’ve encountered shawarmas before in our list of favorite Middle Eastern foods. And as we mentioned in that same article, shawarma was so popular back in the 90s!

Shawarma might not be a craze right now, but it’s still a delicious wrap made with the meat of your choice, garlic or tahini sauce, and veggies. It’s definitely one of the best sandwich wrap recipes ever!

6) Monte Cristo – a good sandwich idea… but not from France!

A Monte Cristo sandwich is one of the best sandwich recipes with ham. Despite the name sounding all French, this is actually an American invention. Food historians generally agree that the Monte Cristo sandwich is a variation of a French Croque Monsieur.

This sandwich supposedly exploded on the culinary scene thanks to Disney. In 1966, they started serving this sandwich in their Blue Bayou and Tahitian Terrace restaurants in New Orleans’s Square in Disneyland.

What is in this sandwich, you ask? Well, you get egg or batter-dipped ham and cheese. Then you pan or deep fry the whole thing.

The end result is one that will leave you wanting more. Some variants involve replacing the ham with turkey or chicken.

The Monte Cristo is so popular, that there’s even a day dedicated to celebrating it! So why not try it out for yourself, right? It’s definitely one of the best sandwich ideas (among many) by Americans!

7) Sloppy Joe – one messy, delicious sandwich!

If you’re wondering, “What kind of sandwich should I make?”, we bet the last thing that would enter your mind is something that starts with the word “sloppy.” What the heck is a Sloppy Joe and who the heck is Joe, anyway?

Well, let’s answer that. Sloppy Joes are sandwiches that consist of three ingredients: ground beef, a sauce made from a combination of ketchup, tomatoes, and chili sauce, and a soft bun.

As for where it came from, people generally attribute the origin to a cafe in Sioux City, Iowa. Back in 1930, a cook named Joe added tomato sauce to his “loose meat” sandwiches. And yes, that’s the Joe in Sloppy Joe.

It’s a messy delicious treat that you should definitely try – just not in the car, probably.

8) Banh Mi – one of the good sandwich ideas from Asia!

This Vietnamese sandwich, according to Banh Mi Bistro, is composed of the following ingredients:

  • Airy and crispy French-styled baguette
  • Meats like Vietnamese ham, chicken, or steamed pork roll
  • Veggies such as sliced cucumber, pickled carrot & daikon
  • Crisp cilantro, fresh chilis and/or jalapeño
  • Various condiments such as pâté, butter, mayonnaise, or soy sauce

Now if you’re wondering why there’s a sandwich of Asian origin, well, it’s because before, Vietnam was ruled by the French. According to The Culture Trip, the Vietnamese were not allowed to change any of the French dishes because they weren’t considered worthy of eating the same food as their rulers.

But when the French finally left, the Vietnamese were left to modify the French dishes to include local ingredients. That meant they finally had the freedom to put whatever they wanted between the bread. And thus Banh Mi was born.

And speaking of the sandwich, it has an amazing flavor profile: salty, sour, sweet, and aromatic all at once! Definitely worth trying out.

And every time you take a bite, remember that not only is it delicious, but it’s also a symbolism of freedom.
